A Catholic organization operating in South Sudan announced the extension of its teachers training activities to Torit, Leer and Nzara in addition to Malakal and Rimenze centres already in operation since two years ago.

Fr. Kalisto Joseph is the Director of Solidarity with Southern Sudan. He told SCR News that his organization began training teachers in Malakal and Yambio since January 2009 and during two years some 600 teachers went through their in-job training programme.

Fr. Joseph explained that the religious institution is extending the project to Torit, Eastern Equatoria, Leer, Unity State, and Nzara, Western Equatoria very soon.

Fr. Joseph revealed that lack of training materials and government support to the trainees are among the difficulties faced by teachers in training.

Fr. Joseph said the future of Southern Sudan depends on the foundation given at the primary schools.

He called on the teachers to take courage and more steps to help pipils.

Solidarity with southern Sudan trains primary school teachers and runs a nursing school in Wau.

It plans to start pastoral work in some dioceses of Southern Sudan.
