The United Nations High Commission for Refugees condemned child labour in Eastern Equatoria state.
March UNHCR report indicated that despite child labour is prohibited and punishable with a fine and imprisonment, the practice often continues unchecked.Torit and Nimule are mentioned in the report as places where children work in the markets, selling tea and riding motorcycles for money.
The report also cites gold mining in Budi County where children are also working in unhealthy and dangerous conditions.
In rural areas, children often work in the fields alongside adults.
