The UN Mission in Sudan, known as UNMIS, needs to put effort in action rather than in words, said a humanitarian agency.

Kirsten Hagon is Oxfam spokeswoman in New Yor. She said the UN Security Council should recognize that people in southern Sudan need greater protection from violence.

Ms. Hagon added that words alone will never make people safer, actions are needed.

Oxfam spokeswoman explained that UNMIS mandates had fine words that were not been put adequately into action to provide security in the villages in South Sudan.

Ms. Hagon said time is running out and the UN must equip UNMIS so that the peacekeepers have the means to protect people from danger.

She added that although UNMIS patrols help deterring violence, too often last year peacekeepers were not present when violence flared.

UN Security Council extended UNMIS presence in the Sudan for another year and included in its mandate to support the referendum for South Sudan self-determination.
