The UN Under-Secretary-General for peacekeeping operations met with the President of the Republic and a Government delegation on Friday morning.
Herve Ladsous was accounted by UN Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS chief Hilde F. Johnson and the Head of the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei or UNISFA General Yohannes Tesfamariam.
Mr Ladsous congratulated President Salva Kiir Mayardit on the celebration of the second anniversary of South Sudan’s independence.
Mr Adsous and Ms Johnson discussed UNMISS support to national political processes including the constitutional review, legal and judicial reforms and capacity-building of the national police, and the resolution of the conflict in Jonglei.
Mr Ladsous voiced international concerns over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Jonglei, the grave violation of human rights perpetrated by the parties to the conflict, and the political and economic conditions necessary to achieve sustainable peace and reconciliation.
Regarding Abyei, the UN chief of peacekeeping operations said UNISFA could only support the implementation of agreements between the Government of Sudan and South Sudan.
He underlined that all armed elements entering Abyei will continue to be disarmed by UNISFA, as mandated by the UN Security Council.
