The Government of Lakes State ordered a Catholic radio station broadcasting from Rumbek to be turned off evoking legal issues.

State information minister Dud Makoi Kuok ordered the shutdown of Good News Radio on Friday morning until the station obtained a license and broadcasting certificate from the national ministry in Juba.

The administration complied with the Government’s order and closed down the station.

Rumbek Diocese Administrator Fernando Colombo told CRN over the phone that minister Makoi made a generic accusation that the station was politicized.

Fr Colombo said the Government complained about the news coverage on the death of a civilian inmate at a military prison and an interview on human rights issues with a state minister.

He added that the diocesan administration was holding a meeting with the Government late in the evening to discuss the ministerial order.

Good News Radio was operating with a registration license issued by the Government of Southern Sudan.

The state government exempted the station from its annual fee during the administration of late Bishop Caesar Mazzolari.
