South Sudan is set to join the UN Human Rights Council in November in a bid to improve its rights situation.

Government deputy spokesperson Madut Biar Yel broke the news at the end of Friday’s ordinary cabinet sitting.

He blamed individuals with illegal guns for human rights violations in the country.

Mr Biar said Justice Minister John Luk Jok took part in the twenty-third Human Rights Council Session in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 27.

He explained that the minister was extensively questioned about South Sudan’s human rights records and harassment of journalists, including Isaiah Abraham’s killing.

The deputy spokesperson said Minister Luk explained that human rights violations were “unavoidable” in a new country without extensive law enforcement coverage.

Mr Biar said the Human Rights Council will help South Sudan to overcome the situation through training.

He added that human rights issues involve the whole community.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit chaired the Council of Ministers that passed the five-year strategic plans for the telecommunications and housing ministries.
