Morobo County Commissioner on Wednesday launched a tree planting project in the County headquarters.

All the county staff planted different varieties of trees during the exercise, Morobo pressman Data Moses told CRN via email.

Commissioner Moses Simon Soro urged the county staff to protect the trees they planted from stray animals and weather changes.

The tree planting aimed to conserve the environment, beautify the county headquarters, Morobo Radio compound and the commissioner’s residence.

Mr Soro said Central Equatoria State declared 2013 the year of agro-forestry to improve food security and rural livelihood.

He encouraged all county officials to plant trees at home, in schools and other institutions.

Mr Soro said tree planting was a long term investment that would fetch money in the future.

He urged the development agencies in South Sudan to support agro-forestry activities, improve the environment, food security and rural development.

The Agriculture Advisory Organization and the UN Food and Agricultural Organization funded the tree planting project.

The plan is to plant over 100 thousand different trees in Morobo County
