The relocation of more than 18,000 refugees from a flood-prone camp in Upper Nile state to a new site was successfully completed ahead of time.

For the past six weeks, UNHCR and partners organised daily convoys to move families and their belongings from the Jamam to the recently constructed Kaya camp.

The last convoy left a transit centre near Jamam on Saturday carrying some 650 people.

UNHCR spokesperson Tim Irwin confirmed to Bakhita Radio over the phone that the Jamam camp is now empty.

Last year, the camp experienced extensive flooding during the rainy season.

Mr Irwin said new refugee arrivals are brought to Kaya where they received shelter and other aid supplies.

He added that new pre-fabricated timber shelters are also being issued to families in Kaya camp.

The new shelters will replace existing tents and will provide more durable protection.
