Highway bandits on Wednesday shot dead a Somali truck driver along the Mayendit road in Unity State.

Mohamed Ali Tieng was driving a commercial truck from Bentiu to Juba when unknown gunmen shot him in the chest through the windscreen, Don Bosco Radio reported.

The assistant driver, who asked for anonymity, said the attackers emerged from the bush and shot at them killing Mr Ali on the spot.

He said he could not identify whether the attackers were soldiers or armed civilians.

The assistant driver took the body of Mr Ali to Rumbek and reported the case to police on Thursday.

On Tuesday, a SPLA soldier travelling along the Rumbek East road escaped death after a shootout with suspected armed civilians.
