Clashes between the Sudan People’s Liberation Army and Arab tribes in Darfur killed at least 58 people, raising tensions along the north-south border.
Muhammad Eissa Aliu, a leader of the Arab Rizeigat tribe in South Darfur, said his tribe fought with the SPLA on Friday.
Mr. Eissa said 58 tribesmen were killed and 85 injured.
He added that the fighting took place in Balballa, South Darfur, which borders Western Bahr al-Ghazal.
The SPLA acting spokesman said the government troops attacked the south army in Raja, Western Bahr al-Ghazal State.
A SAF spokesman denied any involvement.
He said the SPLA attacked the Rizeigat in Darfur, violating the peace agreement.
