The United Nations Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS Justice Advisory Section on Wednesday conducted a one-day workshop on case management and record keeping in Wau.
The workshop focused on advising and providing technical assistance to South Sudan’s Government to end prolonged arbitrary detentions and assist in the legal reform, Voice of Hope reported.UNMISS Judicial officer in South Sudan Victor Yovev explained that the Justice Advisory Section seeks to build the capacity of justice actors at the operational level in record keeping at various institutions.
Mr Victor said it was important to keep records of all the people detained together with their due dates.
He added that proper court management and record keeping will boost quick and fair delivery of justice and reduce cases of prolonged arbitrary detention due to technical issues in the region.
Western Bahr el Ghazal high court presiding judge John Yel Aleu presented to the participants some judicial issues.
He gave remarks on the code of conduct, the rule of law, record keeping and case management.
Justice Yel said it was important for all the departments to know their roles without getting confused with issues regarding law.
He added that the workshop was a chance for Police and Prison officers to know how to proceed with cases before reaching the court by keeping proper records.
Justice Yel assured that all the cases started at the police station by using form 6, they continue with prosecution until they reach the court and eventually to the prison according to the Criminal Procedures Act 2008.
Justice Yel advised all the people to follow proper channels.
The workshop gathered some 55 participants from Greater Bahr el Ghazal region, including judges, court officials, public prosecutors, police, prisons and court liaison officers.
