A peace conference and public awareness on the dangers of small arms and light weapons took place on Saturday in the Freedom Square of Tonj South in Warrap State.
Michael Monywiir, team leader for the conference, said Tonj was the first of six events scheduled for Warrap State to make people aware of the dangers of small weapons, Radio Don Bosco reported. He said small arms and light weapons in the hands of civilians pose threats and do not allow development in the community.
Mr Monywiir said the danger of small arms and light weapons is that they are used in cattle raids and to solve personal problems.
He added that the purpose of the conference was to make people aware that guns were not the solution and that security forces were the people to protect civilians.
Mr Monywiir said the time for war was over and now was the time for development and people needed to leave guns alone and take up farming and development to better livelihoods.
