Female journalists operate in south Sudan in shocking conditions and under considerable intimidation and sexual harassment.

This is the assessment of Janet Steel, an associate professor at the School of Media and Public Affairs in the George Washington University, U.S., after a meeting with female journalists in Juba today.

Ms. Steel told SCR News that detention with out charge and sexual harassment are some of the examples of intimidation women journalists face in South Sudan.

Ms. Steel added that for journalists to work effectively there should be no interference.

Ms. Steel made these comments during a briefing with the female journalists on their role in society.

Over thirty female journalists from different media houses were present at the meeting to discuss challenges they face at work.

The event was organized by USAID.
