Additional UN peacekeepers were sent to Pibor, in Jonglei State, to protect civilians, after a serious breakdown on law and order with uniformed security personnel looting private and humanitarian properties.
UN Secretary General’s spokesperson said “the UN Mission in South Sudan or UNMISS has a full time presence in Pibor and is continuously monitoring the security situation, particularly in respect to the few remaining residents.”He added that the Mission is prepared to assist and protect civilians under threat in the current period as well preparing to assist and protect should residents decide to return to their homes.
UNMISS was already patrolling the town before the looting of private properties and humanitarian supplies started last week, but it was unable to counter the looting spree by organized forces.
The mission reinforced its presence in Pibor with additional troops, deploying a military unit.
