The UN expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Jonglei State.
Toby Lanzer, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in South Sudan, issued a statement on Monday saying he was “deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Jonglei State, where thousands of civilians are in need of assistance and protection.”Mr Lanzer lamented that properties were burned down and schools and health centres robbed, looted and occupied by what he named armed actors.
He said “in the past week, hostilities in Maruwa Hills, Pibor County, forced scores of civilians to flee their homes and aid agencies to relocate their staff.”
Mr Lanzer urged all parties involved to abide by their obligations under national and international law, ensure that civilians are not caught in the ongoing hostilities, and enable all wounded to access medical care.
He noted that insecurity limited the capacity of humanitarian actors to provide emergency surgery and regular medical care.
Mr Lanzer said he was deeply concerned about the safety and security of aid workers as convoys carrying life-saving supplies are being shot at.
He added that aid workers have a unique and protected role in assisting the most vulnerable.
Mr Lanzer called on all parties in Jonglei to ensure that agencies can carry out their work unhindered and in safety.
