Greater Equatoria is the leading region in terms of malaria cases, although the infection is endemic in the whole country.
National Malaria Control Programme Manager Harriet Akelo Pasquale told Bakhita Radio that a recent survey showed that malaria cases increased by 50 percent between 2009 and 2012 without any apparent reason.She added a quarter of children under five and ten percent of pregnant women were living with the diseases across the country.
Dr Harriet explained that malaria prevalence is on the increase: in 2012 over two million cases of malaria were registered and 1,500 deaths reported, but the figures do not show the actual picture.
The official revealed that the Government got a grant of 95 million dollars from the Global Fund for malaria control between 2011 and 2016.
