The media played a crucial role during the elections process in spite of some misshapes, a watchdog said.

Sudan Media and Elections Consortium released yesterday its preliminary report on monitoring the Coverage of Sudan 2010 Elections.

The report says that the role of the media in the elections process was crucial and journalists and media houses supported and facilitated the historical process.

The report added that the media’s contribution was essential for the civic education of voters: they provided accurate information that enabled voters to make informed choices.

The Consortium said the tone of reporting during the campaign was either neutral or positive.

However, the coverage was very uneven. The SPLM got the biggest slot of airtime on radio and TV while the NCP was the main beneficiary of print media.

In the male-female ratio women received six percent exposure on TV and radio and 3.5 percent on print press.
