The national ministry of interior is planning to introduce new number plates to register vehicles and beef up security on the roads.
Police spokesperson James Monday Enocka told the press in Juba that the Traffic Police has problems in identifying vehicles when accidents occur, Bakhita Radio reported. He said there are several cars moving with different number plates and in case they cause an accident they cannot be traced by the Traffic Police.
Mr Monday added that all cars must be registered to be identified in case of theft or accident.
He said the country must have one single number plate SSD followed by some numbers.
Mr Monday said the number plate will be the same but issued by the states that also keep the fees.
He added that the purpose of introducing the common number plate was not to generate revenue but for security.
The Police spokesperson said the Inspector General of Police had already met with five governors and all agreed to have a single number plate model across the ten states.
Mr Monday said the plan is to be presented to the Council of Ministers for endorsement.
Currently each state issues its own dedicated number plates.
