Health officials blame increase in HIV/AIDS infections in the country to lack of community awareness on the dangers of the disease and uncontrolled commercial sex.
Voluntary Counselling and Testing, (VCT) officer in Torit State Hospital, Florence Alfred, made this observation during a consultative meeting at Torit Community Health Resource Centre on Monday, Radio Emmanuel reported.She urged the media houses in Eastern Equatoria to initiate programmes that sensitize citizens on the dangers and effects of HIV/ AIDS.
Ms Alfred said the spread of HIV/AIDS is rampant and that the fact that the disease does not kill immediately attracts related infections like Tuberculoses and diarrhoea.
Torit Community Health Resource Centre Manager, Mark Okongo, said the facility has been established to created opportunity for special service such as post test clubs, HIV/AIDS prevention and stigma reduction.
Eastern Equatoria state Ministry of Health established Torit Community Health Resource Centre in partnership with NGOs, community-based organizations, and civil society organizations.
