Eastern Equatoria elections officials have suspended their activities over an attack by security men on the counting centre.

State High Elections Committee Chairman, Joseph Ojuku, told the press this afternoon that his office has halted operations after security personnel stormed the Rub Hall yesterday evening and cordoned off the place for hours, Emmanuel Radio reported.

Mr. Ojuku said about 7:30 pm two lorries full of armed men arrived at the hall and arrested three officials of the state High Elections Committee for questioning.

He added that the armed men from the security forces claimed they wanted to know why the officials were allegedly recounting ballot papers.

Mr. Ojuku said he reported the incident to the National Elections Commission in Khartoum and to the Southern Sudan High Elections Committee in Juba.

He added that the elections results for Eastern Equatoria state would be delayed due to standoff with the security.

Efforts by radio Emmanuel to reach Eastern Equatoria state security officials including the caretaker governor Johnson Juma Okot, proved fruitless as they were in a security meeting.
