The Sudanese elections were free and fair considering the context, African Union observers said yesterday.

The statement comes a day after observers from the European Union and the Carter Centre said the elections had failed to reach international standards.

Kunle Adeyemi, head of the AU observer mission in Sudan, said the election was not perfect but historic.

Mr. Adeyemi said the AU is convinced that polls were free and fair given the fact that Sudan had not hold any multiparty elections for almost a generation.

He added that his organization has no reason to think the contrary, since they have not found evidence of fraud.
