The UN is requesting access for aid agencies to areas of Jebel Marra, in Darfur, where they have provided aid including food, water, and medicines during the past five years.

Continued instability due to clashes between the army and rebels in parts of the Eastern Jebel Marra has locked out the humanitarian agencies.

United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Georg Charpentier, said UN operations have been on hold for some weeks due to insecurity.

The agencies have been trying to reach civilians in the highlands to measure the humanitarian situation and provide much needed relief.

UN agencies and partner non-governmental organizations are working closely with ministries and other authorities throughout Darfur supporting the needs of the population.

Mr. Charpentier added that as the dry season ends and water becomes scarcer, it becomes more urgent to gain access to all civilians who are living in difficult circumstances.
