The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has strongly condemned an ambush carried out by unidentified armed elements targeting its peacekeeping convoy along the border between Jonglei State and the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA).
The incident occurred on March 1, 2025, when a UNMISS engineering contingent, escorted by military peacekeepers, was traveling from Akobo to Pibor.
According to UNMISS, the convoy was stopped at an unauthorized roadblock before coming under gunfire. Peacekeepers responded in self-defense in line with their mandate and rules of engagement. No UN personnel were injured during the attack.
The Officer-in-Charge of UNMISS, Anita Kiki Gbeho, strongly condemned the ambush and called for accountability.
“Attacks against our peacekeepers are unacceptable,” she said. “We appeal to authorities to undertake a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation to ensure those responsible are held to account.”
UNMISS reiterated that attacks against United Nations peacekeepers may constitute a war crime under international law.
The mission continues to operate across South Sudan in support of civilian protection, humanitarian access, and the implementation of the peace process.
