Two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following an attempted cattle raid at Kilre grazing land in Kauto Administrative Area of Eastern Equatoria State on Saturday, February 14, 2026.
In a press statement, Eastern Equatoria State Minister of Information and Communication, Hon. Elia John Ahaji, said youth allegedly from the Murle community of Greater Pibor Administrative Area attacked livestock while grazing. The assailants were reportedly repulsed by Toposa youth in Kauto, who recovered the cattle.
According to the minister, two of the suspected attackers were killed on the spot, while several others sustained injuries. One Toposa youth was also reported injured during the confrontation.
Minister Ahaji further claimed that reports indicate some of the alleged attackers remain hiding in nearby bushes, raising fears of possible renewed violence. He called on authorities in Greater Pibor Administrative Area to intervene and prevent further escalation.
“The youth from Murle community of Greater Pibor Administrative Area attacked Kilre grazing land on February 14 to raid animals. The Toposa youth repulsed them, killing two and wounding others, while one Toposa youth was injured. Reports indicate some are still hiding in bushes. We call on Pibor authorities, local leaders, and peace partners to engage the youth and prevent further attacks.”
Minister Ahaji reiterated that the Government of Eastern Equatoria State remains committed to maintaining peaceful coexistence with neighboring communities and condemned acts that threaten stability.
“Eastern Equatoria State will continue to work with neighboring authorities, including the Government of Greater Pibor Administrative Area, community leaders, and peace partners to hold perpetrators accountable and prevent further escalation.”
Meanwhile, Greater Pibor Administrative Area Minister of Information and Communication, Hon. Jacob Werchum Juok, said his administration was not aware of the reported incident.
He urged Eastern Equatoria authorities to conduct investigations and enhance coordination to address insecurity along the border areas.
“We are not aware of the incident. These are cattle-keeping communities, and investigations are needed. We have been asking for better coordination and information sharing. A joint meeting to address border insecurity would help strengthen peaceful coexistence.”
Authorities from both sides have called for cooperation and dialogue to prevent further clashes and safeguard communities along the border.
