President Salva Kiir Mayardit has ordered the release of 97 inmates from prisons across South Sudan as a gesture of reconciliation and compassion, reaffirming his government’s commitment to peace, unity, and democratic governance.

The announcement was made during the End-of-Year State Dinner held on Wednesday at the State House in Juba, an event attended by senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society representatives, business leaders, and church leaders.

President Kiir said the release symbolizes forgiveness and national healing as South Sudan moves toward its first general elections since independence, scheduled for December 2026.

“As we move towards the elections, I urge every South Sudanese to choose peace over division and violence,” President Kiir said. “Our unity will determine the kind of future we build for our children.”

The President assured that his administration remains committed to creating conditions for credible and peaceful elections, pledging to allocate resources to the National Elections Commission to ensure transparency and inclusiveness in the process.

Officials described the End-of-Year State Dinner as more than a ceremonial occasion, a moment of reflection on the country’s journey toward peace and an expression of collective hope for a united and stable South Sudan.

The release of the inmates, according to the Office of the President, is expected to strengthen reconciliation efforts and promote a spirit of forgiveness across the nation.
