Kenyan opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has reportedly died in Kochi, India, where he was undergoing medical treatment, according to Indian media and sources close to his office.

Odinga, 80, was receiving care at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital in Koothattukulam, Kerala. Indian news outlets report that he collapsed during a morning walk and was rushed to the hospital’s intensive care unit, where he was later pronounced dead. As of this publication, no official statement has been released by his family, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), or the hospital.

A source from Odinga’s office confirmed his passing to Reuters, although Kenyan authorities and close associates have yet to publicly confirm the news.

Raila Odinga served as Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013, during a power-sharing arrangement following the disputed 2007 elections. Over a political career spanning more than four decades, Odinga was a steadfast champion for democratic reforms, constitutional transformation, and civil liberties in Kenya.

Often described as the face of Kenya’s opposition, Odinga ran for president five times, including the most recent 2022 election, where he narrowly lost to current President William Ruto.

Beyond national politics, Odinga also played a significant role on the continental stage. As the African Union’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development, he promoted regional integration and was a vocal proponent of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep sorrow at the reported passing, calling Odinga “one of Africa’s most respected statesmen.”

“H.E. Raila Odinga was a towering figure in the political landscape of Kenya and a passionate advocate for democracy, human rights, and inclusive development,” said Chairperson Youssouf in a statement released in Addis Ababa.

He praised Odinga’s lifetime of public service and leadership, particularly his contributions to the continent’s infrastructure and governance frameworks.

“Africa has lost one of its most visionary sons,” the statement added. “His legacy of courage, resilience, and commitment to unity and progress will live on.”

The African Union extended its condolences to the Odinga family, the Government and people of Kenya, and all Africans mourning his loss
