Archbishop Patrick Seamus, the first Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan, has begun a pastoral visit to Sudan this week to assess the state of the Catholic Church amid the ongoing conflict and mounting humanitarian challenges affecting pastoral work across the country.

Archbishop Seamus’s visit comes at a critical time for the Catholic Church in Sudan, which continues to operate under difficult circumstances due to the protracted civil conflict, economic instability, and displacement of communities. His mission, according to Church officials, is to express solidarity with the faithful and to better understand the realities faced by clergy, religious communities, and laypeople serving in troubled regions.

During his time in Sudan, the Apostolic Nuncio is expected to visit several Catholic parishes and institutions in and around Khartoum and other regions where access is permitted. These visits will include meetings with local bishops, priests, religious sisters, and members of the laity engaged in pastoral care, education, and humanitarian outreach.

“The Church is walking with the people — even in suffering,” said Archbishop Seamus upon his arrival. “This visit is not only to see the Church’s challenges, but also to witness the resilience and faith of those who continue to serve amidst uncertainty and fear.”

Sudan’s ongoing internal conflict, which has forced millions from their homes and disrupted essential services, has severely affected Church operations, especially in areas where violence and insecurity have displaced entire communities and made regular worship difficult.

Despite these hardships, the Catholic Church remains a key provider of hope and basic services, including schools, clinics, and food distribution centers — often serving populations of all faiths.

Archbishop Seamus’s visit is also seen as a gesture of unity and a reinforcement of the Church’s commitment to peace-building, dialogue, and humanitarian service. His meetings are expected to include discussions with local Church leaders on how to sustain pastoral work and protect Church personnel and infrastructure under current conditions.

Appointed in 2023, Archbishop Patrick Seamus became the first Apostolic Nuncio assigned exclusively to South Sudan, a role reflecting the Vatican’s growing commitment to the young nation. His visit to Sudan underscores the deep and historical ties between the Catholic communities of both countries, and the Holy See’s concern for peace and justice in the broader region.

The Apostolic Nuncio is expected to conclude his visit later this week, with a final Mass and message of encouragement to the faithful in Sudan.
