Wau, South Sudan – More than 800 inmates at Wau Central Prison are facing severe food shortages, prison authorities have confirmed.

Brigadier General John Juma Charles, the Deputy Director of the prison, told Voice of Hope Radio on Monday that the food assistance currently provided by the state government is no longer sufficient to sustain the 870 inmates.

He appealed to humanitarian organizations, religious institutions, associations, and families to intervene with urgent support, warning that prisoners are left with little to eat and their health is increasingly at risk.

“The prison doors remain open to any form of humanitarian assistance,” Brig. Gen. Juma said.

This crisis comes just months after a similar incident in April, when more than 1,000 inmates at the same facility went an entire day without food, amid nationwide shortages that also hit other prisons across South Sudan.
