Chemistry, Principles of Accounts, and Arabic Language have been identified as the poorest-performing subjects in the 2024 Certificate of Secondary Education (CSE) examinations, according to a subject performance analysis released this week.
In contrast, students showed notable improvements in Agriculture, Computer Science, Physics, Islamic Religion, English Literature, and Citizenship.
Announcing the results, Kuyok Abol Kayok, Minister of General Education and Instruction and Chairperson of the National Examinations Council, emphasized the urgent need for reform in the education sector.
“The Ministry will have to embark on the recruitment and training of teachers in Chemistry, Principles of Accounts, and Arabic Language to effectively deliver the curriculum,” Kuyok stated.
The overall analysis reveals that 11,373 candidates — 6,573 males and 4,800 females — failed the exams, representing a national failure rate of 23.7 percent.
Education stakeholders say the poor performance in these subjects reflects significant gaps in teacher competence and instructional quality. The Ministry has pledged to address these issues through targeted teacher development initiatives in the upcoming academic year.
