A passenger car traveling from Juba to Kapoeta came under attack Sunday night near Idolu, along the Torit–Hiyala Road, killing one man, authorities confirm.
Justin Kleopas Takuru, Eastern Equatoria State Police Inspector, told Radio Emmanuel that Marti Nor Mohammed, a Kenyan national of Somali origin, was shot dead in the incident.
“We received the report at 11:50 p.m. from a passenger named Samuel Lokoro. They were nearing Idolu when gunfire erupted. Marti was hit and died on the spot,” Takuru said.
The police say they’ve called local chiefs to investigate, although no suspects have been identified yet.
“We work closely with community police in every Boma of Hiyala Payam. We urge them to help secure the road and prevent such attacks.”
Takuru reassured the public that security forces are working with the state government to deploy troops along the road.
“Let the public not fear. We will monitor the perpetrators and bring them to justice. Forces will soon be deployed in Idolu and Hiyala.”
