The Media Authority, in collaboration with Journalists for Human Rights (JHR), has launched a two-day training workshop on conflict-sensitive reporting in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State. The training commenced on July 22, 2025, and targets over 40 journalists. It is expected to conclude on July 23 with a dedicated one-day session for more than 100 government officials.
Held under the theme: “Enhancing Professionalism in Conflict Reporting through Adherence to the Code of Conduct and Journalism Ethics,” the workshop aims to equip media practitioners with the tools to responsibly report on conflict-related issues while fostering peace and social cohesion.
In addition to the journalists’ training, a special session titled “Media, State Authorities, and Security Sector Relations” was organized. This workshop brought together stakeholders from government ministries, the security sector, civil society, the media, and faith-based organizations.
Speaking during the session, Mr. Sapana Agyuli Abuyi, Director General for Information and Media Compliance at the Media Authority, urged participants to strengthen collaboration and build trust between journalists, state authorities, and security agencies in the interest of peace and stability in South Sudan.
Hon. John Elia, Minister of Information and Communication for Eastern Equatoria State, echoed the call for responsible journalism. He appealed to journalists to avoid misinformation and instead use their platforms to promote peace, stability, and harmony among the people of Eastern Equatoria and their neighbors.
The workshop was officially opened by the Minister of Local Government, representing H.E. the Governor of Eastern Equatoria State. Over 100 participants took part in the event, drawn from various ministries, the security sector, civil society organizations, media outlets, and religious institutions.
JHR is Canada’s leading media development organization. Since 2002, it has empowered journalists across the globe to report on critical issues such as human rights, democratic governance, climate change, and combating misinformation. JHR works to strengthen local media ecosystems and foster ethical, informed journalism.
This initiative marks a continued effort to raise journalism standards in South Sudan while promoting conflict-sensitive reporting as a tool for peacebuilding and national reconciliation.
