The United Nations, in partnership with the European Union, has officially handed over two key educational facilities in Malakal to local authorities, supporting long-term recovery for communities affected by displacement.

The Malakal Vocational Training Centre (VTC) and Joshua Primary School were rehabilitated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and UNHCR with funding from the EU as part of a regional response to the Sudan crisis.

The handover was attended by government and international officials, including Upper Nile State ministers, EU representatives, and the heads of IOM and UNHCR in South Sudan.

The VTC, once the country’s largest, was fully refurbished and equipped for training in metalwork, mechanics, carpentry, tailoring, IT, and more. Meanwhile, Joshua Primary School now features upgraded classrooms, sanitation facilities, and secure fencing to provide a safer learning space for children, many from displaced families.

“Investing in education and skills development means investing in South Sudan’s future,” said Massimo Scalorbi, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation.

Both projects are part of wider efforts to improve education, boost livelihoods, and promote social cohesion across conflict-affected communities in South Sudan.
