One person has been confirmed dead and more than 30 others injured following tribal clashes between Sudanese and South Sudanese refugees in the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement Camp in Uganda.

Ugandan media reported that the violence, now in its fifth day, erupted inside Cluster L of the settlement, where tensions had reportedly been brewing between newly arrived Sudanese refugees and long-settled South Sudanese refugees, particularly members of the Nuer community.

Police spokesperson Rusooke Kitama confirmed the fatality and said that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident.

“We confirmed the fatality and have made two arrests. Several others are injured, some with serious machete wounds,” Kitama said.

The exact cause of the conflict remains unclear.

The clashes have also disrupted essential services, including food distribution. The Youth Centre, a designated food distribution point in Bweyale camp, was forced to halt operations on Monday, July 14, due to safety concerns.

In response to the violence, a major security operation has been launched, with increased deployment of police and security personnel throughout the settlement and nearby areas.

The Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, located in western Uganda, hosts refugees from several conflict-affected countries, including South Sudan and Sudan, and has seen a recent influx of Sudanese fleeing renewed violence in their homeland.
