Lakes State, in collaboration with Health Partners, officially launched the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV)campaign on Friday at Rumbek Freedom Square, aiming to protect children and strengthen the public health system.
Speaking at the launch event, Dr. Maker Malok, Director General at the State Ministry of Health, stated that the vaccine targets children aged 6 months to 5 years across all counties of Lakes State to combat pneumonia—a leading cause of child illness and death characterized by cough, high fever, and difficulty in breathing.
Dr. Maker called on parents to ensure their children receive the vaccine.
Dr. Jiel Jiel, a WHO Surveillance Officer based in Juba, noted that although previous immunization efforts have reduced child mortality, gaps still remain. He said the PCV campaign is part of a renewed government effort to close those gaps with the support of international partners.
“We must ensure full community participation. Let all children get vaccinated,” he emphasized.
Sultan Majak Malual Kodi, Paramount Chief of Matangai Payam, expressed gratitude to the government for strengthening the healthcare sector by making vaccines available. He recalled that in the past, many lives were lost due to the unavailability of basic vaccines. The chief pledged to mobilize the community to support the campaign.
Representing the Governor, Hon. Stephen Mathiang Deng Monydit encouraged parents to prioritize vaccination, stating, “Prevention is better than cure.” He also urged the State Ministry of Health to ensure proper handling and storage of the vaccines.
According to data from the State Ministry of Health, 5,180 pneumonia cases were recorded between January and December 2024, resulting in 83 deaths across Lakes State. Health officials say this campaign is a crucial step in reducing child mortality, and the vaccine rollout is already underway across health centers.
