Residents of Enyif neighborhood in Torit, Eastern Equatoria State, are calling on the government to deploy police forces instead of the Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF), citing rising fear and tension among civilians due to the military’s presence.

The call comes after SSPDF troops were deployed last week, digging trenches in what appeared to be preparation for a possible offensive against the opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Army-In-Opposition (SPLA-IO). The deployment prompted many residents to flee their homes, fearing renewed violence.

Dominica Mathew, a woman leader in Enyif, voiced the community’s concerns:

“Now, if we stay with this force here, we are afraid. We prefer the police uniform—our husbands are enough. We ran for three days until I reached Juba. If these soldiers reach the River Hiniate, we fear. They are military forces, not like the police. Police represent law and order, but these soldiers remind us of war.”

Despite the anxiety, Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore has reassured residents that calm has returned to the area. Speaking during a public address in Enyif on Tuesday, Governor Lobong encouraged citizens to resume their daily routines.

“The fear that has been in people’s hearts should end today. Help in spreading this message—don’t say you don’t have a voice. These forces are here to protect you. They will not be relocated; they are staying with you. People should return to farming, go to Ikwoto, burn charcoal, and resume normal life. These forces are for your security.”

The Governor’s remarks aimed to ease tensions and reinforce the government’s commitment to peace and civilian protection.
