Torit State Hospital’s maternity ward is currently grappling with a severe shortage of medical hand gloves, putting the lives of pregnant women at risk during childbirth.

Keji Rose Phillip, the in-charge of the maternity ward, revealed that the shortage has persisted for over three months. As a result, expectant mothers are being asked to bring their own delivery gloves when admitted.

Keji noted that some women have generously donated extra gloves, easing the situation in the ward temporarily. She expressed her appreciation to the mothers for their support despite the ongoing economic crisis in the country.

Keji urged expectant women to continue delivering at the hospital, where services remain free of charge. She warned that giving birth at home poses serious health risks to both mothers and newborns.

Meanwhile, Otim Simon, a registered nurse and drug store team leader at Torit State Hospital, called for urgent intervention from both the National and State Ministries of Health, as well as health partners, to address the glove shortage.

The statements were made during the “Breeze Program” on Radio Emmanuel 89FM on Thursday.
