South Sudan’s Minister of Information, Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth, has reaffirmed that the country will proceed with its scheduled national elections in 2026. He described the elections as the only viable path to ending South Sudan’s protracted political struggles.
“The election is the only way to resolve the scramble for power in this country.”
Makuei made the remarks on Sunday during the commemoration of World Press Freedom Day at the University of Juba. The event brought together hundreds of journalists, media professionals, and stakeholders from across sectors.
The Minister stressed the importance of a free and professional press ahead of the polls, pledging government support in the form of training and capacity-building initiatives.
He urged journalists to maintain ethical standards and cooperate with the Media Authority, the national media regulator, in advocating for press freedom and safety.
“Journalists must maintain professionalism and work closely with the Media Authority to advocate for media freedom.”
This year’s World Press Freedom Day, usually observed on May 3rd, was marked later due to the weekend, as organized by the national media community and relevant authorities.
