South Sudan’s leading telecom operator, MTN, has unveiled plans to develop a digital ecosystem aimed at reducing cash dependency and addressing liquidity issues affecting customers using its mobile money platform, MoMo.

The announcement comes in response to growing public concern over cash shortages and difficulties withdrawing money from MoMo agents across the country.

Speaking to the press, MTN South Sudan CEO Francis Matseketsa assured customers that the company is working closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure smoother digital transactions and address cash withdrawal challenges.

“While the public of South Sudan is still in the early stages of adopting digital payments, we urge everyone to embrace cashless transactions. Our vision is to see every shop and wholesaler accepting MoMo, making South Sudan a cash-light economy,” said Matseketsa.

He noted that the adoption of digital payment systems like MoMo is essential to advancing financial inclusion, especially for underserved communities, and is a key driver of economic growth.

“Empirical research has shown that digital payments accelerate economic development. We encourage the public to reduce reliance on physical cash and embrace MoMo as a reliable alternative,” he added.

The CEO highlighted recent developments in the MoMo platform, including features that allow users to access goods and services directly through the app, without the need for cash withdrawals at agent outlets.

Matseketsa acknowledged that transitioning to a fully cashless society will take time, but emphasized that the foundation has already been laid.

Creating a cashless society is a journey that cannot be completed overnight. We believe the journey has begun, and we all need to embrace it to ensure its success within the shortest possible time,” he said.

He also addressed the issue of currency denomination shortages, explaining that many customers are unwilling to accept smaller notes, which worsens the cash flow crisis.

MTN called on the South Sudanese public to consider alternative transaction methods such as MoMo, instead of relying solely on physical currency. The company reiterated its commitment to innovating solutions that support a digital financial ecosystem and meet the evolving needs of its customers.
