The Catholic Diocese of Torit in Eastern Equatoria State is preparing to organize a solemn requiem mass to mourn the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88.
Pope Francis passed away at his residence in Casa Santa Marta, Vatican City. His death was confirmed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, at 9:45 a.m. local time. The pontiff had been battling pneumonia after being hospitalized in February and returned home to recover before succumbing to the illness.
In an interview with Radio Emmanuel, Bishop Emmanuel Bernardino Lowi Napeta confirmed that the faithful would be informed of the date for the diocesan requiem mass on Sunday.
“We were taken by surprise on the death of Pope Francis… We’re waiting for official guidance from the Vatican Ambassador and the conference in Juba. We will inform Christians soon on the date for the requiem mass in our Diocese,” Bishop Lowi said.
He added that parish priests across the Diocese have been directed to observe nine days of Novena prayers in memory of the late Pope.
“The nine days called Novena are for prayer for the departed soul. I have instructed priests to hold prayers across parishes, and I will travel to Juba to join the Apostolic Nuncio for mass, as directed by the Sudan and South Sudan Bishop Conference,” he added.
Bishop Lowi remembered Pope Francis for his humility, his dedication to the poor, and his tireless advocacy for peace and marginalized communities.
“We know his humility and his love for the poor and displaced. He helped Christians in Arab countries build churches and encouraged us to support immigrants and seek peace. He truly inspired us when he came to South Sudan,” said Bishop Lowi.
