South Sudan joins the rest of the continent in observing African Vaccination Week (AVW) from April 24 to 30, 2025, under the theme “Immunization for All is Humanly Possible.” The celebration coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), a global effort that has saved millions of lives.

Dr. Anin Ngot Mou, Under-Secretary in the Ministry of Health, noted the country’s progress in expanding routine immunization with support from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. He confirmed South Sudan’s plans to introduce new vaccines, including the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV), Rotavirus vaccine, and a second dose of the Measles-Containing Vaccine (MCV2).

Dr. Humphrey Karamagi, WHO’s Representative in South Sudan, emphasized the importance of prioritizing children and pregnant women in immunization efforts.

UNICEF Representative Noala Skinner reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring that “every child, no matter where they live, receives life-saving vaccines.”

Catch-up campaigns in 30 counties aim to reach more than 146,000 zero-dose children, those who have never received any vaccines.
