His Eminence Stephen Ameyu Martin Cardinal Mulla has called on the people of South Sudan to let go of the burdens of the past, heal divisions, and work towards lasting peace and reconciliation.
Speaking to journalists on April 18 during his Easter message, Cardinal Ameyu emphasized that the message of Easter reminds South Sudanese that despair does not have the final word — especially for a nation that has endured years of hardship and uncertainty.
“The journey towards lasting peace requires us to lay down the burdens of the past, to heal the wounds of division, and to build bridges of trust and mutual respect. Let the spirit of Easter inspire us to embrace dialogue, empathy, and a genuine commitment to reconciliation at all levels of our society.”
Cardinal Ameyu, who also serves as the President of the Sudan and South Sudan Bishops’ Conference (SS-SBC), stressed the need for tireless efforts toward a just and peaceful society.
“Let the Prince of Peace guide our steps as we build a future where justice prevails — where the needs of all are met, not just those from our own family or tribe.”
He urged national leaders to become agents of transformation, creating a society where every citizen can live with dignity, safety, and security.
“Our theme this year, ‘Christ, the source of Hope, Reconciliation, and Peace in South Sudan’, speaks directly to the deepest longings of our hearts and the urgent needs of our land.”
Cardinal Ameyu underscored that reconciliation is at the heart of Easter. Christ’s sacrifice on the cross bridged the divide between humanity and God — offering forgiveness and a renewed relationship.
“Just as Christ rose from the tomb, so too can our nation rise above its challenges — fueled by unwavering faith and the promise of a brighter future.”
He reiterated that the peace God offers is more than just the absence of conflict — it is a deep harmony rooted in justice, love, and righteousness.
