Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni arrived in Juba this afternoon to engage in high-level discussions aimed at addressing the growing political and security tensions in South Sudan.
Upon his arrival at Juba International Airport, President Museveni was warmly received by South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit, along with senior government officials. The leaders proceeded directly to the Presidential Palace to begin their talks.
The Office of President Salva Kiir shared on social media that the discussions will center around bilateral relations and political developments in the country, with a strong focus on stabilizing the situation amid rising tensions.
This visit comes on the heels of a diplomatic mission by the African Union (AU), which sent a delegation to Juba on April 2nd, following the controversial arrest of opposition figures, including First Vice President Riek Machar.
Concerns over South Sudan’s political and security environment are mounting, particularly with recent violent clashes that threaten the integrity of the 2018 IGAD peace deal. As the outcome of Museveni and Kiir’s discussions remains closely guarded, CRN will continue to monitor this evolving situation and provide comprehensive updates.
