Juba, South Sudan – Eight (8) soldiers from the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) who escaped the conflict in Nasir County, Upper Nile State, arrived in Juba on Thursday, recounting harrowing experiences from their time in the war zone.

One rescued soldier, Major Michael Chieruai, who had been in Nasir County since 2018, shared his experience.

“Not all the people of Nasir are killing others. Some took our guns and let us go,” he stated.

Major Michael revealed that he initially escaped with about 40 soldiers, all of whom were disarmed. However, when another group from the White Army arrived, they scattered, leaving only four survivors.

He also highlighted the lack of water as a major challenge during their escape, which led to the loss of some of their comrades.

The soldiers were accompanied to the capital by Koat Nyang Banak, the leader of the Lou-Nuer White Army, who played a key role in ensuring their safe passage.

Speaking to the media upon their arrival, SSPDF Spokesperson Major General Lul Ruai Koang expressed gratitude to the Lou-Nuer White Army and the civilians who protected the soldiers until their evacuation.

“On behalf of the SSPDF, I would like to thank all those who participated in the recovery, protection, and safe evacuation of our soldiers. Their efforts ensured these survivors could make it to Juba safely,” he said.

General Lul revealed that the Chief of Defense Forces assigned him to coordinate the rescue operation. He assured that the SSPDF remains committed to securing the safety of those still stranded in Buong and others who have reached Nyirol County.

He also commended the pilot who risked flying into Buong to evacuate the survivors, describing him as a hero for his bravery.

Upon arrival in Juba, the servicemen were received by SSPDF Spokesperson Lul Ruai Koang, along with the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson of the Akobo County Emergency Evacuation Team, including a former Member of Parliament for Buong County.

The evacuation marks a significant development in SSPDF’s ongoing efforts to rescue personnel trapped in conflict zones.
