A team of independent experts from the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan has commenced a four-day visit to the country, scheduled from 17 to 20 February 2025.

During their visit, the experts are set to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including members of the South Sudanese government, survivors of human rights violations, civil society representatives, jurists, humanitarians, and diplomats, as well as officials from United Nations entities.

The main focus of the visit is to assess the current human rights situation in South Sudan, discussing the findings of the Commission’s latest independent investigations and offering recommendations for improvements.

The experts will hold critical discussions aimed at addressing ongoing concerns over human rights violations, with the goal of strengthening the protection and promotion of human rights in the country.

The delegation, led by Commission Chairperson Yasmin, will conclude their visit with a press conference on Thursday, 20 February, at the UNMISS conference room in Juba. Following this, the experts will present their latest findings to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Established in March 2016 by the UN Human Rights Council, the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan is an independent body with a mandate to monitor and investigate human rights conditions in the country.

Renewed annually, the Commission is composed of three independent Commissioners, who serve in an expert capacity without remuneration. Their work is supported by a Secretariat based in Juba.

In addition to its investigative functions, the Commission is tasked with providing recommendations aimed at preventing further human rights abuses and improving the overall human rights situation in South Sudan.

The visit underscores the UN’s continued commitment to holding the South Sudanese government accountable for its human rights obligations and addressing the ongoing challenges facing the people of South Sudan.
