The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Tombura-Yambio, who also serves as the Chairperson of the Interfaith Council for Peace Initiatives in Western Equatoria State, has urged for calm and caution to ensure peace and stability in the region.
This appeal follows escalating violence across the state following the removal of former Governor Gen. Alfred Futuyo Karaba by presidential decree on February 10, 2025.
Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala expressed concern over the deepening conflict, noting that the removal of Governor Futuyo and his subsequent disappearance have triggered a new wave of violence between the SSPDF and SPLM-IO forces, creating confusion and fear among the local population.
On behalf of the Interfaith Council, Bishop Hiiboro appealed to both parties to cease fighting and work together to restore peace in the state. He emphasized that Western Equatoria has suffered from instability and violence since January, resulting in tragic loss of life and property destruction.
“It is with a heavy heart that I address you today,” Hiiboro said. “The ongoing turmoil in Western Equatoria, spanning from January to February 2025, has been a setback for our state and painful for the peaceful citizens who long for harmony.” He also expressed concern over the violence in neighboring Eastern Equatoria, where clashes between farmers and cattle owners continue to claim innocent lives.
Quoting former President Nelson Mandela, the Bishop stated: “A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones. Let us treat each other with dignity, love, and respect, for it is in this way that true peace can flourish.”
