Local authorities in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria, have confirmed the arrival of cattle herders in Agoro Payam, where their livestock have reportedly invaded farmlands, causing significant destruction.

According to Wani David, the Youth Leader of Agoro Payam, the cattle have destroyed crops in areas like Nyolo and Tono Kwon, leading to widespread concern among residents.

“We have witnessed an influx of cattle from pastoralist communities who are now seeking water sources for their livestock,” said David in an interview with Radio Emmanuel. “The cattle are invading gardens that are not yet harvested, leaving farmers unable to harvest their crops. This has led to growing fears in the community, as people are being forced to evacuate their children and animals from the area.”

David called for urgent government intervention, questioning where the local population of Magwi County is expected to go if pastoralists continue to occupy their farmland.

“We rely on agriculture and hunting for food and income. If these areas are overtaken by cattle, our people will face acute food insecurity, and children will be deprived of education,” David lamented. “The state government must intervene to resolve this issue and allow our community to sustain itself.”

Meanwhile, John Elia Ahaji, the Eastern Equatoria State Minister for Information, Communication, and Postal Services, confirmed that while reports of the cattle influx are circulating on social media, there has yet to be a formal report from local authorities.

We have heard about the cattle invasion, but we are still waiting for concrete reports from Magwi County,” he said.
