The Apostolic Nuncio to South Sudan, Archbishop Seamus Patrick, arrived in Malakal, Upper Nile State, on Monday, December 23, marking his first official visit to the region since his appointment.

The ambassador was warmly received at Malakal International Airport by Bishop Stephen Nyotho Ador of the Catholic Diocese of Malakal, state officials led by Acting Governor James Basha, clergy, and faithful from various parishes.

In a speech at the State Government Secretariat, Acting Governor Basha welcomed the ambassador and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to cooperating with the Church in serving citizens. He emphasized the need to rebuild churches affected by the war and commended the state’s improving security situation.

Bishop Stephen Nyotho Ador lauded the visit, expressing hope that it would strengthen relations between the Church, government, and citizens. He encouraged more visits from the ambassador to inspire the community.

Archbishop Seamus conveyed the Pope’s greetings to the faithful and highlighted his joy in celebrating Christmas in Malakal. He underscored that his presence symbolized the Pope’s solidarity with the diocese.

The ambassador is set to celebrate Christmas Eve Mass with believers at the United Nations camp in Malakal.
