The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Nicholas Haysom, has praised the National Election Commission (NEC) for its commitment to creating a clear electoral timeline aimed at delivering credible and transparent elections by December 2026.

Speaking at a press briefing at the UNMISS office, Haysom emphasized the importance of the NEC’s proposed timetable, which will outline the political, legal, financial, and technical steps necessary for a successful electoral process.

He underscored that the detailed timeline would ensure all necessary preparations are made in a timely and organized manner, fostering an environment conducive to free and fair elections.

A key point of emphasis in Haysom’s remarks was the urgent need to begin preparations for voter registration. He stressed that this foundational step is essential to the integrity of the entire electoral process.

Haysom further urged the NEC to ensure that key political, operational, and resourcing decisions related to the elections be made immediately. This includes taking decisive actions to finalize plans for voter registration, election logistics, and the legal framework that will govern the elections.

Another important aspect highlighted by Haysom was the need for legal reforms. He called on the NEC to identify and propose necessary amendments to the legal framework governing elections. These reforms are vital for the commission to proceed with its planning and implementation of the electoral process.
