South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit met on Monday with Catholic Clerics from Sudan and South Sudan to discuss advancing national peace, reconciliation, and regional stability.
The talks come after the successful Eucharistic Congress and the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Catholic Church in South Sudan and Sudan.
Led by His Eminence Cardinal Dr. Stephen Ameyu, the delegation urged the government to prioritize peace, reconciliation, and unity to foster harmony across the country. The clerics called for decisive actions to ensure all citizens live in a peaceful and secure environment.
“We know the President as a man of peace. He briefed us on the Tumaini peace initiative, highlighting that a government team is set to travel to Nairobi to negotiate for lasting peace in the country,” said Cardinal Stephen.
President Kiir welcomed the Bishops’ appeal and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining peace. He emphasized the government’s efforts to address the pressing challenges facing South Sudan.
The discussions also touched on the escalating crisis in neighboring Sudan, where ongoing conflict between rival factions has led to widespread suffering. President Kiir and the Catholic Bishops urged the warring parties to end the violence and pursue durable peace.
The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration between the Church and the government in ensuring a peaceful and united future for the people of South Sudan.
