The President of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Samoei Ruto, arrived in Juba, South Sudan, to meet with President Salva Kiir Mayardit and provide updates on the ongoing Tumaini Peace Talks in Nairobi.
This visit highlights a significant phase in peace negotiations with South Sudan’s holdout groups.
President Ruto’s meeting with President Kiir will discuss the Tumaini Initiative’s progress, aiming for a final agreement and implementation of the peace framework. Speaking on the talks, Ruto affirmed that opposition groups have expressed readiness to sign the Tumaini Consensus, the culmination of inclusive negotiations.
The Tumaini Initiative, proposed by President Kiir and supported by Kenya and development partners, emphasizes an inclusive model for peacebuilding in South Sudan. Since its inception, the initiative has facilitated in-depth dialogue with South Sudanese stakeholders, working toward lasting stability.
The leaders will also discuss the LAPSSET Corridor Project, which seeks to enhance regional connectivity by linking South Sudan with the Indian Ocean, boosting trade and local economies across East Africa.
“The opposition groups have assured us of their commitment to signing the Tumaini Consensus. This is a monumental step toward a sustainable peace in South Sudan.”
